Tori Spelling returned to her podcast after an eight-week absence to reveal she had been severely ill—so ill that her five children had to take over the household. The 52-year-old Beverly Hills, 90210 alum described the experience as “hell.”
What began as a sinus infection cascaded into enterovirus, rhinovirus, COVID, and RSV. An inner ear infection triggered vertigo so debilitating she could not walk unassisted. “I couldn’t even come downstairs. They would have to help me walk to the bathroom to pee,” she said. Her seventeen-year-old daughter Stella rearranged her schedule to pick up eight-year-old Beau from school.
Spelling, who shares Liam, Stella, Hattie, Finn, and Beau with ex-husband Dean McDermott, said she lacks the financial means for outside help. She had recently rediscovered cooking with her children, a small domestic ritual that brought them together post-divorce. The illness stripped that away, forcing a return to takeout and leaving her apologizing daily: “I’m sorry, guys. I’m hoping tomorrow I’ll feel better.”
The prolonged sickness, she admitted, became “depressing.” But what broke her was watching her children step into roles no child should have to fill. “You feel like a child yourself,” she said.
She is recovering now. The ship, temporarily sunk, is slowly being raised.
